Biography

Emma Frances Munroe was born on 11 November 1846 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.¹
She graduated from public high school, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1863.¹
Emma Frances Munroe was a teacher in the public schools in Cambridge.¹
She taught first at the Thorndike Grammar School, then at a training school established by the city. From 1874 until 1889 she was a teacher of French and assistant to the master in the Cambridge High School.¹
Emma lived at 17 Traill St, Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her sister Mary.²
Her interests were broad and varied. In her will she left substancial bequests to the Animal Rescue League, the New England Conservatory of Music, the Museum of Fine Art, the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the New England Watch and Ward Society (an organization involved in the censorship of books and the performing arts; later the emphasis changed to combating the spread of gambling), the Athenaeum, the Farm and Trades School, the American Unitarian Association and the New England Historic Genealogical Society.¹
She never married.¹
She died on 16 March 1937 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at age 90.¹

Biography

Charles Edward Munroe was born on 24 May 1849 in Townsend, Massachusetts.¹
He graduated from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1871 with a B.S. summa cum laude.²
Between 1871 and 1874 he was an assistant in chemistry at Harvard where he established the first course in chemical technology and the first summer school on chemistry.²
From 1874-1876 he was professor of chemistry at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Marylnaand. Then for the next 25 years was a professor of chemistry at George Washington University. During 1892-98 he was also Dean of the Corcoran Scientific School, and from 1893 to 1917 Dean of the faculty of graduate studies which he established.²
He married Mary Louise Barker on 20 June 1883.¹
He was made a commandant of the order of Mejidieh by the Sultan of Turkey. In 1920 he bes an Officer of the Order of Leopold of Belgium. In 1912 he received the honorary degree of LLD from George Washington UIniveristy.³
He graduated from Columbia University in 1904 with a PhD and then a LL.D in 1912.²
He was a consulting chemist on explosive effects, and then until 1933 was the chief explosives chemist of the US Bureau of Mines. Also he was appointed by the Swedish Academy of Sciences to nominate a candidate for the first Nobel prize in chemistry.²
He died on 7 December 1938 in Forest Glen, Maryland, at age 89.¹

Story

In 1889 Charles started experiments with smokeless powder used by the navy in big guns. While at Newport Station he discovered the 'Munroe effect' by which letters sunk in a gun-cotton cube are indented on a steel plate when the tube is detonated against it. This threw light on the nature of the detonation wave. In addition to his invention of indurite he originated the porous cone for filtration, the platinum filter of the Munroe crucible, used in atomic weight determination and other precise works, and a method for the preparation of catalysts. As an authority on explosives he was the author of more than 100 books and papers in the field.
