- When William was 15 Lady Arabella Stuart (a cousin of King James I and in line to the throne) fell in love with him - she was 27 years old. The King forbid a marriage; they obeyed. The King did not like the union of two potential Tudor pretenders to the throne who were 4th & 6th in line; they would be a threat. Seven years later they renewed their love and married on 22 Jun 1610 in Greenwich Palace. Because they married secretly without his consent, the King put William in the Tower of London & Lady Arabella in Lambeth. They planned to escape - Lady Arabella dressed like a man but was caught and put in the Tower. William succeeded & went to the continent looking for his wife. They never saw each other again. She died in the Tower, after going insane. He was allowed to return to England.2
