William served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on P-38J #42-67939, 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in York County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on May 27, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

William was "Killed In Action" when his P-38 was hit by anti-aircraft fire in the Watton, Pas de Calais, France area and crashed during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
