Amasa Y. Dunn

Amasa was born in about 1855, in Iowa, the son of Harvey and Betsy Ann Leavitt Dunn. His mother died in November 1859; he was then adopted by his uncle and aunt, Crandell and Mary Ann Cahoon Dunn, between 1860 and 1870 according to census records.
USH Record and DC Info Prior to Research: According to his DC, he was single, had worked as a farmer, a previous resident of Box Elder County, Utah. He became a patient of Utah Territorial Insane Asylum, as it was known at the time, on October 3, 1887, residing there for nearly 21 years at the time of of his passing. Amasa Y. Dunn was believed to be about 53 years old when he passed from this life at Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah.
Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project: Amasa Y. Dunn was among 485+ patients of the Utah Territorial Insane Asylum (now known as Utah State Hospital) between 1886 and 1960, buried in the Provo City Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, given a pauper’s burial, alone without recognition or ceremony. The Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project requested donations to create a monument with individual plaques to honor each of these precious spirits. Thankfully, it was completed and dedicated to them October 10, 2018, in Provo City Cemetery.
