Obituary from Grand Rapids Eagle, Wednesday, March 25, 1891, page 1, Very Sudden Death
Mr. Eben F. Hall of 247 East Bridge street died very suddenly about 3 o'clock this morning. He was employed by the Berkey & Gay Furniture company as a machine hand, and yesterday did a very large day's work. He did not feel entirely well and left the factory at 5 o'clock. At 6 he went to the Waltz saloon and asked for some hot whiskey, saying he was sick. He took a single swallow and sat at the table. Mr. Waltz went home to supper and did not return until 10 o'clock. Then his bartender said to him "that man is sitting there yet," referring to Hall. Then Mr. Waltz found he was unconscious, got a hack and took him home. He lingered until 3 o'clock, and died, but never recovered from his stupor. Apoplexy caused his death. Mr. Hall leaves a wife and four children. He was a very hard working, faithful, reliable man who was much esteemed by all who knew him.3
