- Rebecca Hall was born on 29 March 1824 in Shirley, Massachusetts.1
- She married Stephen Purington on 6 September 1846.1
- Rebecca, on becoming a widow, joined the Shakers in Shirley; and, after a trial of four or five years - during which she abounded in zeal for the new sect, declaring its members the only elect of the earth, and all others heretics against reason - she became enamored of one of the brethren - William Smith - whom she married..., and returned to what she had deemed "the beggarly elements of the world;."1
