By in 1646 Thomas lived in Milford, Connecticut, where he was granted a house lot #55.²
He married Phebe (née unknown) Canfield estimated 1652.³
In 1656 In 1656 he was admitted to the church at Milford.
In 1669 he was Seargent of the Train Band.
Thomas was admitted freeman in 1669.
1674-76 he was a representative to the General Court.
He died before 22 August 1689 in Milford, Connecticut.^1,4
He was buried in Milford Cemetery, Milford, Connecticut. Plot: Buried in Peter Prudden's garden - no tombstone remains. Although no tombstone remains for her or Thomas in the old section of the Milford cemetery (Peter Prudden's Garden), we have a permanent reminder of them in the stone of theirs on the Memorial Bridge at Milford, CT. Their memorial stone is on the northwest side of the bridge about half way down from the tower. The stone reads "Sergt. Thomas Campfield obit 1689 and Phebe Crane his wife".⁴
***Research Conclusion: In the NEHGR it is discussed that Nathaniel, Thomas and Matthew were NOT brothers.⁵

Story

This Cenotaph is in the Founders Cemetery in Milford CT. The Founders Cemetery Memorial Site is actually a bridge. This Memorial Bridge, while not actually a cemetery, is listed on Connecticut's 1934 Hale Index to Headstone Inscriptions as "Founders Cemetery." It is a memorial bridge dedicated to Gov. Robert Treat, the first two pastors, and the founders of Milford Connecticut and to the Wepowage Indians from whom the original settlement land was purchased. The doorstep from Gov. Jonathan Law's home is incorporated into the bridge. Most of the people whose names are inscribed on the bridge are buried in the ancient section of Milford Cemetery.

Biography

Jabez Smith was born on 29 November 1705 in Milford, Connecticut.¹
He married Ruth Seymour, daughter of Matthew Seymour and Sarah Hayes, on 12 June 1729 in Ridgefield, Connecticut.¹
Jabez and Ruth lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
Jabez was one of the 18 persons at Ridgebury who organized the church in Jan 1769. He was elected first Deacon 2 Mar 1770.
On 1 November 1780 Jabez married Hannah Bennett Mead (also written Benedict.)^1,2,3
He died on 22 September 1781 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, at age 75.¹
The deaths of Jabez and Ruth are documented in Ridgefield, CT historical records yet their grave stones cannot be found.

An explanation for why Jabez's grave is not found in the Ridgefield Titicus may be in Charles Rockwell's "History of Ridgefield, CT". In there he states that in about 1850, some of the older grave stones were removed in order to create an additional roadway in the area of the cemetery. These grave stones were not replaced. It's possible that Jabez and his wife's headstones were among those removed in 1850.³

He died in 1735 in Fairfield, Connecticut, at age ~66.
