Henry Botsford

#1679, (-about 1686)
Pedigree Link
Parents
Biography
- Henry Botsford was baptized on 15 June 1608 in Bedfordshire, England.
- He married Elizabeth Woolhead, daughter of Thomas Woolhead and Alice Lambert, on 26 January 1630/31 in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, England.1
- In 1637 and 1638 Henry Botsford failed to pay his tax in Eggington (hamlet of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire). There were lists of people who failed to pay contributions towards 'Ship Money' - that is a tax levied by King Charles I in 1636 and it led to widespread discontent. Henry, it appears, was one of the people who cherished a rugged individualistic hatred of the tax collector. Chief reason for Henry's emmigration (according to DLJ) were economic.
- Henry Botsford died about March 1686 in Milford, Connecticut.
Henry's wife joined the Church in Milford in 1640. Henry himself didn't join until 1644, notwithstanding the decided advantages which church members enjoyed in New Haven Colony. Before that, he was one of the 6 men who were admitted as freemen in Milford without being church members. He seems to have been a man of probity and judgement who minded his own business and minded it well. He was one of the land speculators who opened up the new town of Derby. He built up a good estate, and his children married well. Nothing whatever to his discredit appears in any of the contemporary records, dispite the fact that in those days men were hailed before the magistrates for very trivial offenses.
His will was dated 1 Feb 1685/86, inventory taken 15 Apr 1686, totaled 503 pounds, 2 shillings, 4 pence. Since some of the children had received advancements towards their portions during his lifetime, it is clear that, without being wealthy, he had managed his affairs with prudence and had acquired what was, in the early colonial days, a fair-sized estate.
