  • Nathaniel Brewster was born in 1620 in Bristol, Somerset, England.1
  • He graduated from Harvard, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1642 as a member of the first graduating class. Harvard, for about 100 years ranked its graduates according to the social standing of their families. Nathaniel was ranked 9th of 9. Yale, founded in 1701, did the same.
  • He married Abigail Reymes, daughter of John Reymes and Frances (née unknown) Reymes, in 1643.2
  • Soon after Nathaniel took his degree the laws enforcing uniformity in England were repealed, and others passed, which made the situation of the Episcopal clergy that many left their parishes and the vacancies were filled by Presbyterians and Independents. Several persons who had fled to New England to escape oppression, and others who had been educated here, among whom were Brester and some of his classmates, returned to England to enter the ministry.
  • From 1643 to 1663 he was a minister in England, beginning at Neatishead & Irsted. 1649 in Walderswich, Suffolk Co. (attorney for Thomas Pell) 1651 settled Alby, Norfolk Co. 1655 sent to Ireland by Cromwell 1656 received B.D. from University of Dublin ('it is said')1662 back in Alby.3
  • In 1650 He was a Minister of Neatishead and Irstead, Norfolk Co England. About 1654 he became minister at Alby, Norfolk Co. where he seems to have made his home until his return to England, broken by trips to Ireland in 1655 and 1656 with Henry Cromwell. The Cromwell government gave him an allowance of 36 pounds per year.
  • Nathaniel Brewster went to Ireland with Henry Cromwell in 1655 and 1656.4
  • Nathaniel Brewster married Sarah Ludlow about 1656 in Ireland.
  • He received Bachelor of Theology or Divinity from the University of Dublin, where he apparently spent more than a year.
  • In 1663 He returned to Boston in Master Prout's ship. He became a minister in a church there Oct 1663.
  • He preached a short time in Boston and Eastchester.
  • In 1665 he went to Brookhaven, Long Island, in the autumn. He settled there as first minister. He was a pastor there until his death. He died - age and infirmity having for sometime disabled him from performing constant ministerial duty.
  • He died on 18 December 1690 in Brookhaven, New York, at age ~70.

  • Jehu was admitted freeman on 13 May 1631 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.1
  • In 1632 he was admitted to the Roxbury Church as member number 12 (an early member.)1
  • On 6 August 1635 the General Court appointed Jehu and John Johnson a committee for Roxbury and 2 from Boston to make a cart bridge over the Muddy River and the Stony River. In the records of General Court for 1 Mar 1635 - there was an argument about Mr. Dumar''s swine spoiling Jehu's corn.
  • In 1636 The Mass. General Court had granted the right to make settlements on the Great River (Conn. River) and Jehu and Matthew Mitchell were 2 of the 8 men who, under the leadership of William Pynchon, signed an agreement to undertake a settlement on the river. They purchased land on both sides of the river from the Indians for '18 fathoms of wampum, 18 coats, 18 hatchets, 18 hoes and 18 knives.
  • In 1636 Jehu moved to Springfield, Massachusetts.1
  • In January 1638

    he was in Agawam (now Springfield) and was one of six appointed to 'set out the bounds of ye plantation up ye river on both sides of ye river and to mark ye trees for clearing of it.' (Thomas Merrick - see index) was also one. Spring 1636 8 men on foot, women and children on horseback, with portable possessions went to Agawam, which at that time was a part of Conn. Colony. Jehu was the town's first tax collector. Payment was in money and/or wampum at 4 a penny, or in good and merchantable beaver at 9s per pound. He was deputy to the General Court 5 Apr 1638. Deputy for Springfield to Conn Legislature April 1638 and Sep 1641. Deputy for Fairfield Sep 1645, Apr 1646.

    He may have married more than once.

  • He was the Deputy for Springfield to the Connecticut Legislature in April 1638 and Sep 1641, and in Sep 1645 and Apr 1646 he was the Deputy for Fairfield.
  • In 1641 Jehu moved to Fairfield, Connecticut.1
