Story

Daughter of Burwell Duke (1752-1824) and Frances Hawkins (1756-1829).

In Memory of Landy and Sarah (Married 1826) ALFORD

Pioneers of 1846.

Landy & Sarah Alford traveled from Missouri joining up with the Donner Party, but took a different route.

The Alfords settled here in Suisun Valley. Landy & Sarah Alford donated five acres of land for the church and cemetery in 1856. In the Alford family plot, lies an old and crumbling field stone inscribed with the words "In Memory of Landy and Sarah Alford, pioneers of 1846." The Alford's had 10 children: Nancy, Lucinda, Adeline, Mary, Margaret, Charles, Lousia, Delila, Sarah, and William.

It is said that Sarah Alford (Mother) is buried at the Suisun/Fairfield Cemetery. She divorced Landy and he is said to be buried in Round Valley in Contra Costa County, CA. Their daughter Sarah and son William are buried together here.

Although the cemetery dates back to 1851, the earliest stone found during the 1983 Survey was that of John Blake, born in Giles County, Virginia, died in Suisun Valley Sept.5, 1852.

Landy Alford died on 8-31-1871 Aged 66 years. Buried at "Round Valley" in Contra Costa County. Mrs.Alford died at the age of 88 years.
