He married Abigail Canfield, daughter of Samuel Canfield and Elizabeth Merwin, in April 1700 in Norwalk, Connecticut.
The children of his brother Thomas became wards of Jonathan after Thomas' death in 1712. They had been living in Ridgefield, CT.³
Jonathan and Abigail moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut.
He died on 19 June 1731 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, at age ~66.¹

Matthew Canfield was baptized on 27 February 1603/04 in St Andrews, Harlestone, Northamptonshire, England.^2,3,4
Another spelling of his name was Campfield.²
He married Sarah Treat, daughter of Richard Treat and Alice Gaylord, in 1643/44 in New Haven, Connecticut.⁵
Matthew was admitted freeman in 1654.
He was an early and original settler at Norwalk. He was soon made a magistrate and judge, and was not only a leading man there, but in the colony. He was one of the 19 signers of the Petition to King Charles II. for the Charter of the Colony; and his name is mentioned in that invaluable grant to Connecticut in 1662.⁶
He died on 19 March 1672/73 in Newark, New Jersey.¹
He was buried in First Presbyterian Churchyard Memorial Garden (Old Burying Ground), Newark, New Jersey. The present (2012) City Hall now stands where the cemetery once was.⁷
***Research Conclusion: In the NEHGR it is discussed that Nathaniel, Thomas and Matthew were NOT brothers.⁴

David and Mary had 4 children.¹
She died on 7 May 1778 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, at age ~40.¹
