Story

William Forrester, who was born at Coleraine, in the North of Ireland, son of Frederick and Jane (Gault) Forrester, grandson of William, and great-grandson of Rev. William Forrester, who went from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Londonderry, Ireland.

He sailed from Coleraine with his brother Arthur Forrester, 29 Aug. 1762; arrived at New Castle, on the Delaware River, 27 Oct 1762; went to New York City, 7 Nov. 1762; and thence to Ridgefield, Conn., in Nov. 1766. He was a trader, gained a handsome property, and had a large influence in his neighborhood. He resided in the Society of Ridgebury, where he died of apoplexy, 29 Jan. 1809, "in his 66th year."

  • John Rockwell was baptized on 22 July 1621 in Fitzhead, Somerset, England.1,2
  • Fitzhead is northwest of Taunton, co. Somerset. Parish church is St. James & St. Mary.2
  • On 7 December 1641 he received 2 acres plus woodland. Stamford had been established in the summer of 1641 by a group migating from Wethersfield, CT.2
  • He married Elizabeth Weed, daughter of Jonas Weed and Mary (née unknown) Weed, about 1654 in Stamford, Connecticut.3,4
  • In 1669 he sold his land in Stamford and moved to Rye CT (now NY.)1
  • John Rockwell died in 1673 in Rye, Connecticut (now New York.)3
  • After he died it took almost 30 years to settle the estate (and sell land to pay off the debts) of John Rockwell.
  • John had sold some land at Budd's Neck in Rye to one "Garit Traves" but apparently never received payment for it before his death. This was subject to a lengthy dispute not resolved until 1707, when Jonathan Rockwell finally received payment for the land from Philip, son of Garrit Travis.2
