Biography

Obil Rockwell was born on 2 December 1776 in Ridgebury, Connecticut.
He was also known as Ohil.
He was a farmer, unassuming in manner, but commanding respect of all who knew him.
He married Betty Rockwell, daughter of Daniel Rockwell and Abigail Smith, on 27 November 1799 Ohil and Betty were second cousins.¹
Ohil and Betty were married by Rev. Nathan Burton.¹
The later years of his life were spent in Danbury and Norwalk CT.
Obil Rockwell was an active member of the Ridgebury Congregational Church. Its records show that at the June 1850 meeting, he was elected Moderator, a position involving the smooth oversight of the congregation’s business, including the chairing of meetings. At a special meeting during his term, on 1 February 1851, the church voted to build a new meeting house—the one that still stands today.²
The last year of his life was spent in Dover Deleware.
Obil Rockwell died on 19 October 1870 in Dover, Delaware, at age 93 The last year of his life was spent in Dover Deleware.
He was buried in Ridgebury, Connecticut. After his death his remains were brought back to Ridgebury from Dover and buried there.

Eli Rockwell was born on 20 April 1805 in Ridgebury, Connecticut.
He married Adelia Ann Smith, daughter of Elias Smith and Eunice Coley, on 28 December 1828 in Ridgefield, Connecticut.¹
Eli Rockwell was a farmer.
His wife Adelia died on 10 November 1839 in Ridgebury, Connecticut, leaving him a widower at age 34 .
He married Sarah Ann Hanford on 13 September 1840 in Ridgefield, Connecticut.²
The Ridgefield Town Records show that Eli Rockwell was chosen Selectman at the annual meetings of 1843 and 1844, and again from 1848 through 1850 (the last year I copied). At the same time, the Ridgebury church records show that Eli served as clerk and treasurer from June of 1850 until his death.³
He and Sarah appeared on the 1850 US Federal Census of Ridgefield, Fairfield County, Connecticut, enumerated on 10 September 1850. Also listed with the household was Mary McNeal age 16 b Norwalk CT. The estimated value of the real estate was $2500.⁴
He died on 25 August 1857 in Ridgebury, Connecticut, at age 52.

Abijah Rockwell was born on 1 July 1751 in Ridgefield, Connecticut.^1,2
He married Lydia Burchard, daughter of Isaiah Burchard and Sarah Betts, on 30 September 1773.
Abijah and Lydia lived in Ridgebury, Connecticut.
In April 1777 Abijah Rockwell received minor damage to his property when the British Army under Tryon passed through Ridgebury on their retreat from the Danbury raid. In a report to the Connecticut General Assembly by a committee appointed in May 1777 to evaluate losses in Ridgefield due to the “hostile incursions” of the British the previous month, Abijah Rockwell appears on the list, with his losses given as £4 17s 9d. [From CT Archival papers viewed at the State Library, Hartford] When the state eventually got around to compensating the “fire sufferers” in 1792, his loss was evaluated to total £3 5s 2d. The state compensated the victims not in cash but in grants to land in an area of the future Ohio. [CtAR3 I-63n] Abijah also acquired shares of his father’s claims and purchased that of his brother David. On 7 May 1811 Abijah sold his rights to land in the township of Ridgefield, Huron County, Ohio.³
He died on 30 August 1825 in Ridgebury, Connecticut, at age 74.^4,5
