  • Abraham Pierson, Sr, was born in 1611 in Bradford, West Ridings, Yorkshire, England.2

  • He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, England, in 1632 with a B.A. He was ordained deacon at York in Sept 1632.2
  • He married Abigail Mitchell, daughter of Matthew Mitchell and Susan Wood, in 1636 in England.1
  • In 1640 Rev Pierson and others from Lynn MA formed a new township on Long Island, which they named Southampton.2
  • Abraham Pierson, Sr, immigrated in 1640 to escape persecution for his Puritan views. He became ordained a Congregational minister in Boston.2,3
  • In 1644 he formed a new church at Branford, which was a part of New Haven Colony.2
  • Abraham and Abigail had 10 children.1
  • In 1666 Pierson moved to Newark. He was a strong Puritan, believing church membership was a condition to have civic rights. The colony of Connecticut did not have such a restriction. So Pierson and his followers moved to Newark to pursue his visioin of theocracy.2

    The Rev. Abraham Pierson Sr., was one of the most prominent figures in the New Haven Colony, and his activities are well-documented in many places, including the following.

    Early Connecticut Marriages as found on Ancient CHURCH Records Prior to 1800, by Frederick W. BAILEY, New Haven, Vol 2, 1896. These records show that the Rev. Abraham Pierson (Sr.) continued to perform weddings in Branford long after he moved to Newark.4
