John Hollister

Children with Joanna Treat (b. about 24 May 1618, d. October 1694)

Biography

  • John Hollister was born about 1612.
  • He married Joanna Treat, daughter of Richard Treat and Alice Gaylord, estimated 1638.1
  • John Hollister immigrated to America about 1642 the year his name first appears in Wethersfield CT.
  • John was admitted freeman in 1643.
  • He represented the town in the General Court a number of times beginning in 1644. He was one of the principal military men in the colony, and was appointed (with others) to press men at Wethersfield for an expedition (presumably against the Indians). In Feb 1656 he was appointed (with others) to give "the best and safe advice to the Indians, if they agreed to meet and should crave their advice." John was a Lieutenant.
  • In 1656 the Rev John Russell privately excommunicated Hollister from the church, without giving him an opportunity to have a hearing or even a vote of the church, and refused to give his reasons for such a summary proceeding when they were demanded by Hollister. This caused a great rukus because of the prominence of the Hollister and Treat families. A petition to the General Court (the Colony Legislature) was prepared-the men signing one column, the women signing another. Hollister was elected to the General Court so that he could present the petition. The General Court ordered that Mr. Russell give his reasons for his conduct towards Hollister. Russell steadily refused, and the quarrel ended several years later by the minister and some of his supporters moving to Hadley.
  • On 14 March 1660 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, he was appointed collector.
  • He was a large land-holder in Wethersfield, especially that portion of the town lying on the east side of the Conn river, now Glastonbury.
  • He died in April 1665 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, at age ~53.

Will

John Hollister left a will dated on 3 April 1665 In part: "I give my daughter Mary four score pounds to be paid on her marriage day or else when she comes to ye age of twenty. Three score pounds of which shall be paid by my son John Hollister". He has £1642 pounds, 2 sh, 6 d.
