William Tuttle

• William Tuttle was baptized on 26 December 1607 in Ringstead, Northampton, England.
• He married Elizabeth (née unknown) Tuttle estimated 1621 in England.¹
• He and Elizabeth (née unknown) Tuttle immigrated on the ship Planter with William's mother, 3 children, a brother and cousin and their families arriving on 1 July 1635.²
• The family originally settled in Charlestown, MA, where he was a proprietor in 1636.²
• William was a merchant and also a farmer. He was referred to as 'Mr', a title of importance at that time.
• Between April 1639 and June 1639 William and Elizabeth moved to Quinnipiac Colony (New Haven), Connecticut, with their family.
• He was a subscriber to the fundamental agreement in New Haven. He was rated about that time of £450, which shows that he was a man of substance. In 1646 he was fined for falling asleep at the watch house. His first home in New Haven was the corner of State and Grove Street - the lot on State St running to or beyond Wall Street. In 1656 William Tuttle bought of Joshua Atwater his land, house and barn on the corner of Chapel and College St - this became the Tuttle homestead. This was sold after the death of the widow Elizabeth to Yale College and was the only land owned by Yale for 30 years. William's business enterprises were not good, and forced him to settle down to farming. He held various minor public offices, was a juror, constable from 1666-67.
• He died in June 1673 in New Haven, Connecticut.
