Ralph Russell¹

Biography

• Ralph Russell was born in 1640 in Lynn, Massachusetts, born in England, or Lynn MA, or Wales. Date 1625 or 1640.¹
• He married Mary Hitchcock, daughter of Edward Hitchcock and Frances (née unknown) Hitchcock, on 12 October 1663.^1,2
• They were married by Mr Gilbert.³
• In 1664 Ralph and Mary lived in East Haven, Connecticut+.³
• He died in 1679 at age ~39.³
• Ralph Russell came to East Haven about 1664, at the establishment of the Iron Works. John Russell, his brother, was a potter in the furnace. In 1664 a piece of land was granted to Ralph Russell by the advice of the town, probably to induce him to become a settler, as all trades were considered benefits to the young colony. Ralph Russell died in 1679 and in the same year the Iron Works were given up. It is a tradition in the Russell family that the death of the principal workmen produced this change. Some authorities say the ore m North Haven was exhausted. His descendants became large landholders in the vicinity of what is now called Russell street, and the land is still (1907) in the possession of his line of descent.
• ***Research Conclusion: The East Haven Russells seem to be in no way connected with the Branford and North Branford Russells. The latter descended from Rev. Samuel Russell, who was pastor of Branford Church forty-three years and in whose study Yale College was founded, of which he was librarian thirty years.

Nathaniel Jarvis

Biography

• Nathaniel Jarvis was born estimated 1600 in Wales.¹
• Nathaniel was a sea captain. He commanded a ship for several years between Bristol England and Jamaica.
• In Jamaica he married the widow of a rich planter, gave up his seafaring life, came to Boston 1668 - some traditions say 1654 - with his wife, settled there, and became a prosperous merchant and influential citizen. Not long after 2 of his brothers came from England and tradition says one of them went to Hartford, CT (may have been Stephen who appeared in Huntington LI in 1661) and the other went to Concord MA. It is believed John Jarvis was his son.
