He chose, and the court appointed, John Potter, Jr. his guardian on 8 Jul 1740. He lived in Amity for a time, until moving to New Haven after the death of his first wife, where he became a 'New Light.' He and twenty-six others formed a new church and he was chosen deacon 11 Oct 1773. He held that office for twenty-five years until his death.
Early Colonial Records:
[He] was a inn holder at New Haven. In May, 1767, he received [sterling] 5 5s. 6d. for billeting soldiers.11 Dec 1775 [he] was chosen as one of a 'Committee of Inspection' to look after Tories and expose their machinations .He was a selectman of the town during the years 1776, '77, '79, '83, '84, '85. A charter incorporating the City of New Haven was granted 8 Jan 1784, and at the first election, 21 Jan 1784 [he] was chosen councilman.
