Inscription
From Orcutt's "History of Stratford"
Here lies the Body of Lieut. Samuel Uffoot,
who died Dec. ye 30 A.D. 1746 in ye 77 year of his age.
I have been to the Old Burying Ground in Stratford three times, and I have never found his tombstone, so it is either gone or unreadable.
~MY ANCESTOR~
The son of JOHN & MARTHA (NETTLETON) UFFORD, Samuel married ELIZABETH CURTISS, daughter of ENSIGN JOSEPH & BETHIA (BOOTHE) Curtiss on Dec. 5, 1694 in Stratford, Conn.
He was left a large portion of the estate of his uncle, Thomas Ufford, Jr. in 1683, was a Ensign in the 1st Company of Stratford in May, 1714, and a Lieut. in the South Company of Stratford in May, 1720. Although there was a Samuel Ufford who served in the Revolutionary War, this is not the one since he died before the war.
He inherited a large portion of the estate of his uncle, Thomas Ufford, Jr., who died in 1683 without issue in Stratford.
Administration of his estate was granted to his sons, Thomas & Joseph Ufford on Jan. 6, 1746/7. Daughters named in his will were Martha Hubbell, ELIZABETH BEERS (my ancestor), Eunice DeForest, Bethia Hawley, the heirs of Abigail Beach, Anna Patterson, and Mary Hawley.
Samuel & Elizabeth Ufford were the parents of 13 known children. Not listed in his will were Sarah Ufford, Samuel Ufford, John Ufford, and Ebenezer Ufford.
