Gage, Elmer
Section L, Block 57, Lot 9
Elmer Gage was born on September 13, 1842, in New York. On April 30, 1861,
at the age of 18, he enlisted at Medina, New York for a two year term of service. He
served as a Private in Company D of the 28th New York Infantry. Within three months
he was discharged due to disability. His military discharge record states that there was
“no objection to re-enlistment,” so a year later on August 9, 1862, Elmer re-enlisted
for a three year term of service. He was mustered in on October 22, 1862, and served
as a Private in Company A of the 151st New York Infantry. This regiment engaged in
many battles, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor, all in Virginia.
On June 26, 1865, near Washington D.C., Elmer and the 151st were mustered out.
Elmer married Orpha on December 20, 1865, in Yates, New York, and they had
two children together. The family came to Northern Michigan in 1877 and lived on a
farm east of Petoskey. He worked as a farmer until his death on October 6, 1899. He
was 57 years old.
