Hammond, Fred A. Bethlehem
Fred A Hammond, a lifelong resident of the Town of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born to the late Viola Mae Winne and Fred A Hammond on July 25, 1927 in Cedar Hill (Bethlehem). Fred worked as a foreman at Fort Orange Paper until he began his 47-year career as a carpenter with J. Wiggand & Sons, Inc.
Fred was a life member of Selkirk Fire Co. #2 and was the last surviving charter member at the time of his passing. He volunteered at the Glenmont Fireman's Fair for 50 years and was a member of the Selkirk Fire Co. #2 Friday Night Dart League for over 20 years.
Fred is survived by his wonderfully large family including his wife of 73 years, Shirley C. Wiggand; his four sons, Gary (Elizabeht), Ronald (Susan) (husband of the late Janet), Glenn (Nancy), and David (Erika); his 12 grandchildren, Gary Jr. (Karen), Stacey (Scott), Brian, Carrie (Bob), Jeffery (jennifer), Jason (Jennifer), Lisa, Nicholas (Lauren), Kristyn (Paul, Ryan (Rachel), Ross, and Jack; his 19 great-grandchildren and his great-great-grancchild. Fred was predeceased by his siblings, Winifred (Dwain Robertson), Mary (William Zakens), Robert (Patricia), Donald (Barbara), and Belle (James Johnson).
The family offers special thanks to his outstanding caregivers: Craig, Victoria, Tricia, Leah, Margaret, Takeya, and Ny. The entire family is so incredibly grateful for your compassion and care.
Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, with a funeral service to follow, in the Durant Funeral Home, 741 Delaware Ave., Delmar. The interment service will be held on Tuesday, September 21, in the Elmwood Cemetery, Route 9W, Glenmont. The procession will commence from the Durant Funeral Home at 12:15 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Meals on Wheels program at the Senior Projects of Ravena.
