Alma LaVerne Smith, age 73, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at her home in Midland, Texas. LaVerne was born on August 2, 1939, in San Angelo, Texas, to Ruby and Jack Sanders. She was one of eight children.
LaVerne was a 1957 graduate of Eola High School in Eola, Texas. She graduated from Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Angelo, Texas, in 1960, and began her life long career as a Registered Nurse. She worked at both Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, Texas, and Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas.
LaVerne married R.V. Williams in June of 1960 and had two sons, Randall and Grady. After R.V. passed away in 1964, she married Junior Smith in May of 1966, and moved to Midland, Texas.The couple had two sons, William and Morris.
LaVerne was a member of First Baptist Church, Community Bible Study, and volunteered for Midland Community Theatre's Act IX. She was an advocate for clean water and the environment.
LaVerne is survived by her sisters: Doris Hudson and husband, Bert Hudson of San Angelo, Texas; Helen Hunter and husband, Dorwin Hunter of Grand Prairie, Texas; Judy Tabor and husband, Dale Tabor of Early, Texas; and Janice Sanders of Sterling City, Texas; her children: Randall Williams and wife, Mary Ann Williams of Leipsic, Ohio; Grady Williams and wife, Mary Williams of Lewisville, Texas; William Smith and wife, Stacey Smith of Havelock, North Carolina; and Morris Smith of Dallas, Texas; her grandchildren: LaTisha Williams, Matthew Williams, Kalee Smith Shearing and husband, Justin Shearing, Kamile Smith, Kendall Smith, and Kevin Smith; and one great granddaughter, Julee Shearing.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and Jack Sanders; her two husbands, R.V. Williams and Junior Smith; and siblings, Harvey Sanders, Maridel Sanders, and Billie Gene Sanders.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday, August 12, from 4:00-5:00 p.m., at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 13, at 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church with Senior Associate Pastor Bob Billups, officiating.
