Sept. 20, 2005 obituary. PORTLAND - Charles E. Bemis, 75, of Deerfield Road, died Sept. 18, 2005 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 26, 1929, in Newton, Mass., a son of Charles and Margaret (Rowean) Bemis. He attended Boston English High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1952 with the Army Signal Corps (ASA) in Japan and Korea. After leaving the Army he took a state department post working in Taiwan, Poland and Belgium. After marrying the former Yvonne VanBaerlem in Brussels, they came to Portland in 1961 and he opened and operated the Paperback Book Mart on Congress Street for many years. In later years, he was employed by the Portland School Department. He was an avid sports fan and most recently had been employed by the Portland Sea Dogs. Mr. Bemis was a member of several organizations including the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed attending army reunions. Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, corner of Mellon and Sherman Street in Portland. Burial with military honors will follow.¹

Yvonne Paule (VanBaerlem) Bemis died at Gosnell Memorial Hospice Oct. 8.

Bemis was born July 27, 1935, in Brussels, Belgium to Adrien and Jeanne (Julien) VanBaerlem. She attended schools in Brussels and worked in Antwerp before marrying Charles E. Bemis of Massachusetts. The couple then moved to Portland, where they raised five children.

Bemis worked as a CNA in area nursing homes before switching careers and working at Commercial Union Insurance Company until she retired.

She enjoyed traveling, shopping at flea markets and yard sales, the beach, reading and spending time in her yard.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles, a brother, Jean Marie VanBaerlem, and a sister, Monique VanBaerlem of Brussels.
