An obituary was published

Donald "Casey" L. Schultz, 88, of Miller, SD passed away, Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.

Memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 1, 2023, First Presbyterian Church, Miller, Pastor Robert Brooks, officiating.

Donald "Casey" LeRoy Schultz was born February 20, 1934, in Rapid City, SD to Charles and Ethel (Williams) Schultz. At age four, he along with his family, moved to a farm north of St. Lawrence. He attended elementary school in a rural school, St. Lawrence, until 3rd grade when he started attending school in Miller.

He graduated from Miller High School in 1953. Within his time there, played on the Rustler football and basketball teams, and also ran track.

Casey enlisted in the Air Force in January 1954 and went to San Antonio, Texas for basic training. After that, he served nearly three and a half years stationed in Germany and France. He came back to the states in 1958 and worked as a traffic controller in Detroit, MI, which he did not enjoy at all.

After moving back to Miller, Casey worked for the county and loved playing cards at Bud's pool hall for a living. In 1959, he began working at Crossman Hatchery with Lee Crossman. (Lee was Luella's uncle, not her father as many people think.) Casey became the owner of the business in 1974 and ran it until he closed the doors December of 1994.

Casey married Luella Crossman on February 21, 1962. He loved pointing out that his birthday was on the 20th of February, they married on the 21st and Luella's birthday is on the 22nd, so they completed their celebrating within three days.

After closing the Hatchery, he worked for a carpenter for four years and then decided to retire. Casey and Luella had a swimming pool in their back yard, which took a lot of his free time and care.

Casey enjoyed ballroom dancing and learning to play tennis. He was an avid Rustler, Minnesota Vikings, and Twins fan. It was always a bad day when any one of these teams lost.

He was baptized into the Presbyterian faith in 1953. Casey was involved in im many organizations. He served with of the Lions organization, the Historical Society, as a Co-Chairman of the Tourism committee, the On Hand Development committee, the Civic and Commerce and a City Council member for several years. Casey was the Chairman of the Hand County Centennial Committee from 1987-1989 and worked on the organization for the 2000 "All School Reunion". He was always one to promote Miller.

Casey is survived by his wife, Luella, Miller; sister, Dorothy Dickert, SC; nieces and nephews: Barb (Willie) Hasart, Jim (Marilyn) Krick, Terry Krick and Jenise Krick; brother-in-law, Bruce (Marilyn) Groves, AZ; along with many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Phyllis Groves, Jean Krick, and Doris Schultz; brother, Dale; and brothers-in-law: Jim Krick and Dick Dickert.
