• In 1668 he purchased a home in Brookhaven NY, paying for it in cattle. Later he built the meeting house in Brookhaven; for that service he was to be tax-free for 6 years.²

George Norton¹

Biography

• George Norton was born about 1610 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, probably.²
• He immigrated in 1629 from Gravesend England in the company of Rev Francis Higginson, settling in Salem MA.³
• George was a carpenter. In 1634 he contracted to build the meeting house at Salem for £100.³
• He married Mary Machias estimated 1633.^1,4
• George was admitted freeman on 14 May 1634 in Salem, Massachusetts.³
• He served on juries in 1638, 1639 and 1640.³
• George and Mary moved to Wenham, Massachusetts. He also started the village of Jeffries Creek, now Manchester.³
• In 1656 Lucie Downing of Salem leased a farm to George for 10 years. He was to build a house, the chimney to be of brick, and to have one year's rent free. The rent was £18 a year paid in Indian corn, wheat, barley, pork, butter, cheese and cattle.³
• He died in 1659 in Essex, Old Norfolk County, Massachusetts, at age ~49 probably.^1,5
• Inventory of his estate was taken on 22 September 1659 It was valued at £134.11.6. Freegrace and John, the eldest sons, petitioned the Court to allow them to give up their portion of their father George Norton's estate to their mother, Maria, for her sole use during her widowhood. Also they would wait for the Court to identify the shares of their siblings and then will pay them their share so their mother may have the whole estate. (Awesome children, especially for their time LSR 2013.)⁶
