Temperance Woodhull¹

• Temperance married William Helme, son of Thomas Helme, about 1710 in Suffolk County, New York.¹
• In 1750 Temperance Woodhull, born about 1697 and supposedly unmarried as late as 1717. It seems probably that she married William Helme of Setauket, son of Thomas Helme. William Helme was evidently born about 1686 since in 1750 he stated that he was about 64 years old. While such statements of age are not always trustworthy, this one appears to be accurate, since William Helme witnessed documents with his father as early as 1702. Followng a general pattern of migration from suffolk County up the Hudson River Valey, William Helme had moved to Goshen, Orange county by 29 march 1751 when he conveyed land as William Helme Senr of goshen. He made a second conveyance 22 August 1754, and may have been still living on 22 may 1758, when his son described himself as William Helm Jr. Contemporary documents identify William and Phineas as sons fo William helme, but the rest of his children are placed largely by a process of elimination. his brother Thomas had only one son, and his brother Anselm never appears in Brookhaven records, which suggest that he died unmarried. Children of William Helme, perhaps by Temperance Woodhull (order uncertain), 1 William, 2Mary, 3Charity (born c 1721), 4Susanna (born 4 May 1722), 5Anselm, 6Thomas, 7Phineas.
