Obituary Notice

An obituary was published

Dr. J.N. Bills, a widely known citizen of Decatur, died suddenly at 1:45 Tuesday at his home on Gault street, aged about 65 years. He had been in poor health for several years past and while his friends knew that his condition was such to result in death at almost any time, the summons came very unexpectedly.

Sunday he was uptown visiting with his friends, and yesterday while not feeling well, his condition was not alarming. He returned last evening at the usual time and a little before 2 o'clock his wife was awakened to find him in the agonies of death. He was a dentist by profession but for the last twenty years he has not been actively engaged in business.

Dr. J.N. Bills was born in Troy, Renassler county, N.Y. on Jan 30, 1830. He was educated in the public schools of that city, finishing at the Polytechnic institute. When 18 years old, he made a trip to California with his father, remaining there until he was 28 years of age. In 1852, he went to St. Louis and for three years practiced dentistry, moving then to Ramsey where he remained until 1859. In that year, he came to Decatur and resumed the practice of dentistry until 1865 when he retired from active business and devoted his time to the management of the property he had accumulated.

During the war by appointment from President Lincoln, he served as collector of internal revenue. He was originally a Democrat and afterwards a know-nothing. Since 1860 he has been an uncompromising Republican.

Dr.Bills was married May 25, 1853 at Troy, N.Y. to Miss Arrozina Fuller, daughter of George & Hulda Bruce Fuller. To the couple were born one son, George Clarence Bills, who died at the age of 6 years in 1860. Their adopted daughter, Addie, recently married to J.A. Disney, lived with the couple since she was 3 years old.

The funeral will take place from the family residence on Gault street at 5 o'clock Wednesday evening June 20. Rev. W.C.Miller of the Congregational church will conduct the services.
