• John arrived in New England sometime before 1660. It is not known why he came, because he was not a Puritan, never became a member of a church and therefore could not hold town offices. It is believed John came to America for adventure and to make a better future for himself than was possible at that time in England.
• He married Sarah Barnes, daughter of Thomas Barnes and Mary (née unknown) Barnes, on 29 March 1666 in Farmington, Connecticut.¹

William Ward

• He married Phebe Fenner, daughter of Arthur Fenner and Sarah Browne, on 28 March 1660 in Middletown, Connecticut.^2,1
• After 1674 he built a fulling mill, and the town granted him land. Fulling - see Definitions of Unfamiliar Terms.³
• William was active in town affairs in Middletown. He served as constable, rate maker, surveyor and deputy to the General Court. In 1682 he became Ensign of the Middletown Train Band.³
• William Ward died on 28 March 1690 in Middletown, Massachusetts, at age 57.¹
• He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Massachusetts. The gravestone was still legible in 1974, after 300 years: Here lyeth the body of Insine William Ward aged about 58 years who died March 28, 1690.³
• Inventory of his estate was taken estimated May 1690 It included about 1,000 acres of land and four pages of personal effects. Included in the inventory were nine coats, six waist coats, four pairs of gloves, various boots, shoes and spatter-lashes. Also listed were two Bibles.³

• She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut. The gravestone was legible in 1974, after 300 years: Here lyeth the body of Phebe Ward wife of Ensigne William Wrd aged bout 58 years 1691 who died September 1.⁵
• ***Research Conclusion: While marriage records substantiate that William Ward married Phebe, her last name was not given. It is known from probate records that Phebe Fenner's (daughter of Arthur) married name was Ward. The argument is made by Holman in "The Fenner, Browne, and Tully Ancestry" that the man with the last name of Ward that Phebe Fenner married is William Ward. The name Fenner appears in descendants of William and Phebe Ward.......The reason for such confusion who who Phebe Fenner really was.⁵
