He brought up his family in Waterbury. He was a surveyor, served on the school committee, served as grand juror and was 3 times deputy to the General Court. He was a sergeant from 1715-1729.

He graduated from Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1697.
He married Susannah Ward, daughter of William Ward and Phebe Fenner, estimated 1699.²
John Southmayd was a minister.
He was pastor of the First Church at Waterbury 1705-1740, a town clerk 1721-1755, a Justice of the Peace 1740-1750 and a representative from 1740-44, 1754.
He died on 14 November 1755 at age 83.
