Story
BIOGRAPHY
Patrick was born about 1122, the son of Walter FitzEdward of Salisbury and Sibylle de Chanort.
Before 1141 Patrick was constable of Salisbury, a powerful local official but not a nobleman. That year Patrick married his sister Sybille to John Marshal, who had been a local rival of his, and he transferred his allegiance from King Stephen to the Empress Matilda. This political move gained him his earldom, and the friendship of John Marshal, who was to send his younger son William to stay with him. It was in Patrick's household where the famous William Marshal first learned about knighthood.
Patrick also minted his own coins, struck in the county town of Salisbury during the so called 'baronial issues' of 1135-1153. Only four examples have survived, three of which are in the Conte collection.
Patrick married twice. Nothing is known about his first wife Maud; his second wife was Ela de Ponthieu, daughter of Guillaume I Talvas, comte de Ponthieu et Alençon, and Hélie de Bourgogne, whom he married in 1149. In 1150 they had a son William who would have progeny, followed by three others, including Walter and Philip. Patrick was killed at Poitiers, France, on 27 March 1168 in an ambush by forces of Guy de Lusignan, who would later become count of Jaffa and Ascalon, and king of Jerusalem.

Edward de Salisbury1
#12829, (after 1060-before 1130)
Pedigree Link
Biography
- Edward de Salisbury was born after 1060 in Salisbury, England.1
- He married Adelize de Rames estimated 1120.2,3
- He died before 1130.1
- He was buried in Bradenstoke, England.1
Story
Edward was an Englishman who, unusually, continued to hold a large valuable tract of land after the Norman conquest. This part of England was valuable as, at that time, Wiltshire was part of Wessex, the most influential region of England and home of the capital city, Winchester. He was sheriff of Wiltshire as early as 1080/81. As Edward the Sheriff he attested a charter of William the Conqueror's wife Matilda of Flanders for Malmesbury in February 1080/81 and a charter of William and Matilda for Holy Trinity in Caen, in 1082, as well as sundry royal notifications which may be of an earlier or later date.
In 1086 he held 33 manors in Wiltshire, as well as smaller estates in Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, Middlesex, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire. He survived William the Conqueror as he attested three notifications of his son William II Rufus.

Biography
- Eleanor of Aquitaine was born about 1124 in Château Belin, Gironde, France.1
- She was also known as Eleanor de Poitou.1
- In 1129 her title was 'Duchess d'Aquitaine.'.1
- She married Louis VII, King of France 1137-1180, on 22 July 1137 in Bordeaux, France.2
- She married Henry II, King of England 1154-1189, son of Geoffrey V of Anjou and Matilda of Normandy, on 18 May 1152 in Bordeaux, France.1
- Eleanor of Aquitaine died on 31 March 1204 in Fontevraud-L'Abbay, Maine-et-Loire, France, at age ~80.1
The eldest daughter of Guillaume VIII-X de Poitou, duc d'Aquitaine, and Aénor de Châtellerault, Eleanor was born about 1124. When her brother Guillaume died in 1137 she became her father's heir. She was brought up by her grandfather, the renowned troubadour Guillaume VII-IX d'Aquitaine. When her father also died in 1137 she inherited the duchy of Aquitaine and married the French King, Louis VII. Their son was stillborn, but their two daughters would have progeny. Eleanor accompanied her husband on the 2nd Crusade (1145-1149) and was rumoured to have had affaires with Saladin and others. On their return to France, Louis VII had their marriage annulled on 18 March 1152 on grounds of consanguinity - but the real reason being she could (!) not bear a son.
Eleanor, then about 30, wasted no time in seducing the nineteen-year-old Henry, duke of Normandy, marrying him on 18 May 1152 in Bordeaux. Over the next fifteen years five sons and three daughters were born. Eleanor and Henry then grew apart and, when their children had grown up, she supported first one son and then another against Henry. In 1189 Henry died and Eleanor lived long enough to outlive her son Richard 'the Lionheart' and see her favourite son John become king before she herself died in 1204 aged about eighty-two, to be buried at Fontevrault.1
