An obituary was published

Luther Sargeant was born at Danville, Caladonia county, Vermont, April 9th 1821 and died at his home near Vernon Feb. 25, 1904. His age was 82 years, 10 months and 15 days; he was the oldest living settler in this part of the country.

He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Brown of Burlington, Iowa, at that place June 18, 1843. To this union ten children were born. Seven of whom survive him, viz.-Mrs. Mary DeHart of Chualar, Cal., Mrs. Emeline Connor, of Des Moines, Ia.; Oliver of Van Buren county, Iowa; Mrs. Cornelia Wilson, of Bonaparte, Iowa; Mrs. Harriet Doughty, of Van Buren County, Ella Forbes, of Milton, Iowa; and Melvin, who resides at the old homestead. Two children died in infancy, and a daughter Mrs. Laura Smith died Dec. 5, 1895.

There are 12 grand children and 5 great grand children living. All of his children except Mrs. DeHart were present at the funeral.

Mr. Sargeant came to Van Buren county Sept. 20, 1839.
