DEAN. At the home of his son, S. S. Dean, in Spirit Lake, Friday, July 25th, of cancer. Charles Dean, aged 80 years and 9 days.
Deceased was born in New Jersey and moved to New York at an early age. in 1844 he married Hannah Hanks, who died thirty years ago. He moved to Minnesota in 1870 and came with his son to this place about a year ago. He was not known to many of our citizens, but those who knew him best say he was an exemplary Christian. He seemed well until a few days before his death. He leaves three sons, one at Sheldon, one in New York state and one here.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon in the Methodist church. Rev. E. G. Keith officiating, and the remains were buried in Lakeview cemetery.
CAPTAIN HARVEY HANKS was born in the town of Greenwich, Washington Co.,N.Y., Aug. 16, 1816. He was seventh child and youngest son of a family of children of Amos Hanks and Polly Fisk....
Mr. Hanks purchased the old homestead (from his father) in the year 1841, and has resided thereon until the present time (1878). His early education was confined to the common school of that day. In the year 1848 he married Sarah Stewart, of Argyle, she being third child and third daughter in a family of five children. She has only one sister living, who is the wife of Henry Rogers, of Ohio. The result of this union was six children, — Martin, born Nov. 7, 1848 ; Mary, born Nov. 28, 1850 ; Fannie S., born Jan. 23, 1855 ; Harriet L., born July 1, 1858; Harvey A., born Aug. 4, 1865; and Stewart W., born Oct. 14, 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Hanks are identified with the Baptist church of Lakeville. In politics Mr. Hanks is an ardent supporter of the Republican party. In the year 1842 he became captain of a company, in the State militia, of the Fiftieth Regiment, Fifteenth Brigade of Infantry, in which capacity he served for three years. His ancestors, grandfather and great-grand-father, were also at one time residents of the town of Greenwich, both being natives of Connecticut.
