Burr Eldredge
NOVEMBER 28, 1925 ~ SEPTEMBER 29, 2019 (AGE 93)
Burr Salmon “Coach” Eldredge, 93, passed on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at his home surrounded by his wife and family.
Born at home in Myton, on November 28, 1925, the son of Joseph Harold and Erma Salmon Eldredge, he was a lifelong resident of the Uintah Basin. In his early years, Burr lived in Myton and Altonah before moving to Duchesne. He began working in his family gardens as a child. He later worked in the stores where his father worked. Often people would call the stores with messages for families which Burr would deliver on foot. He also helped harvest ice, worked at a local service station, hauled manure, did yard work, worked as a hay bailer and other farm work, often for very little pay as the Depression was just ending. Later he worked in timber and loved it. This led to a job with the Forest Service fighting fires, clearing trails, maintaining phone lines, and pulling fence.
Burr graduated from Duchesne High School where he was student body president in 1944. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Germany. After World War II, Burr attended Brigham Young University studying Physical Education, and it was there that he met his wife, Jean Knecht. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1950, and he graduated in 1951.
After Jean graduated in 1952, they returned to Burr’s beloved Uintah Basin where Burr became a teacher at Roosevelt Junior High. He taught physical education, math, history, and health. He also found great joy in coaching multiple sports, and many residents knew him simply as “Coach.” He retired in 1987. In addition to teaching he directed Roosevelt’s youth recreation programs and built cabinets.
Burr gave dedicated service in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including scout master, home teacher, ward and stake clerk, and bishopric counselor. He loved serving in the temple, and served in the Provo and Vernal temples for decades and loved the associations he made there. He and Jean also served as senior missionaries in the England London South Mission.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hauling wood or just going for a drive.
Burr leaves his wife of 69 years, Barbara Jean Knecht Eldredge; his sisters Eva Eldredge and Renae Powell; and his children. Lloyd Eldredge (Paula Hale), Mikelene Hinckley (Scott Hinckley), LaMar Eldredge (Julie Wills), Scott Eldredge (Debbie Hill), Bryan Eldredge (Julie Gergely), and Barbara Rees (Lynn Rees) as well as 25 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Orba Pearce, brother Harold Eldredge, and sister Erma Hogan.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 12:00 Noon at the Roosevelt 1st & 4th Ward Chapel. Viewings will be held on Friday evening at the Hullinger Mortuary from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m.
Burial in the Roosevelt Memorial Park. Military honors will be presented by the Roosevelt American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple Construction Fund.

################################################
Brett Eugene Eldredge passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the age of 73. He was surrounded by his loving family in his home in Chico, California. Affectionately known as "Big B" due to his towering 6'5" stature, Brett's boisterous and joyful energy left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Brett was born on March 13, 1951, in Berkeley, California, to Harold Salmon Eldredge and Mary Leona Dillman Eldredge. As a preschooler, he became known for sneaking out of school to visit his father's students, who also served as his babysitters, on the University of California, Berkeley campus. At age nine, Brett's family moved to Fair Oaks, California, where he helped his father construct their family home.
In high school, Brett's curiosity, energy, and love of learning flourished. He excelled in sports like football, basketball, and baseball, served as class president, and participated in the marching band. After high school, Brett embarked on a journey of exploration, studying civil engineering at the University of Edmonton, Alberta and living in Germany for two years before returning to California. He attended community college and later earned a psychology degree and MBA from Sacramento State University.
While working in Sacramento, Brett met the love of his life, Laura McLachlin, in 1981. They married in 1986 and moved to Texas, where they both earned PhDs. Afterward, they returned to California, where they both secured professor positions at California State University, Chico. Brett and Laura were dedicated educators, but family was their true devotion.
Brett became the proud father of Jessie (born 1990) and Zachary (born 1994). Later, he embraced his role as "Papa" to his beloved grandchildren, Rhylan (born 2014) and Ellie (born 2023). His love, wisdom, and humor continue to inspire his family.
Brett had a personality as vibrant as his trademark big smile. Known for always singing or whistling a tune, he enjoyed hobbies that showcased his zest for life, including photography, where he captured the beauty of leaves and roses; cooking, specializing in pasta, Asian cuisine, and barbecue; and outdoor activities like cycling, hiking, backpacking, and camping. Brett cherished annual family trips to national parks and found peace exploring Upper Bidwell Park in Chico and spending time at the family cabin at Lake Almanor.
After retiring from Chico State in 2019, Brett embraced new opportunities for learning and teaching. The COVID-19 pandemic thrust him into the role of elementary school teacher to his grandson, Rhylan, a challenge he took on with his characteristic enthusiasm. Brett also immersed himself in art and history with classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), endless books and audiobooks, and by joining a choir.
Brett faced his amyloidosis diagnosis with courage and resilience, his positivity shining through even as his health declined. Whether enjoying a walk or a bike ride, planning a recipe, playing a board game, or working on his photography, Brett's unwavering joy for life was a source of inspiration to all who knew him.
Brett will be deeply missed but remembered with love by his wife, Laura; his children, Jessie and Zachary (married to Mattea); his grandchildren, Rhylan and Ellie; his siblings Leesa (married to John Dupree) and JoAnn (married to Tom Simmons); as well as countless friends and family who were touched by his kind, loving heart.
In honor of Brett's life and resilience, the family encourages donations to support amyloidosis research and the search for a cure at: Amyloidosis Research Consortium.
Brett's love, laughter, and wisdom will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
