Cleda Ida Horton, 87, died Feb. 23, 2002, of natural causes in Klamath Falls.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hawthorne Memorial Park in Grants Pass. O'Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel, Klamath Falls, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Horton was born Aug. 16, 1914, in Amsterdam, Mo. She was one of nine children born to Odis and Ellen (Marshall) Summers.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Creighton Horton, on Aug. 19, 1931, in Las Animas, Colo. They made their homes in Colorado, California, Kansas and Missouri until moving in 1952, from Lewis, Kan., to Grants Pass. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1982. She moved to Klamath Falls in 1996 to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Doyle and Alice Horton of Midland.
In her younger years, Mrs. Horton worked occasionally at a golf course restaurant and also as a motel maid. Her primary career, however, was as a homemaker.
She was an excellent cook and enjoyed growing her own produce and teaching her daughters-in-law some techniques about working in the kitchen. When she lived in Lewis, she cooked for 26 ranch hands on a ranch where her husband worked. She was also an accomplished seamstress and liked to crochet.
In addition, she loved playing card games, such as 31, Canasta, and poker, and she and her daughters-in-law would often have a "ladies poker night" that could last from dusk to dawn while the men were off hunting. She liked to go fishing and helping her husband hitch up the boat behind the pickup truck and camper to travel from one fishing hole to another. Some of her favorite spots were the Obenchain Reservoir near Bly, Dog Lake near Lakeview, and fishing for salmon and steelhead on the Rogue River, the Chetco River, and at the ocean.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Doyle and Alice Horton of Midland and C. Phil and Beverly Horton of Prineville; son, Jay Horton of Eugene; grandchildren and their spouses, Ronald Horton of Midland, Pati Horton of Klamath Falls, Kristi and John Singleton of Redmond, Chuck Horton of Bend, Dawn Neal of Medford, Gary and Patty Horton, Audrey and John Whiddon, and Tami Satterlee of Eugene, and Dennis and Diana Horton of Reedsport; great-grandchildren, Josh Whiddon, Jeremy, Katie, Jasmine, Michael and Charlie Horton, Nichole and Jason Satterlee, Kyle and Malori Singleton, and Jacob Neal; sister, Meda Adkins of Grants Pass; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Gregory, Janie Duncan, Faye Summers and Thelma Morgan; brothers, Claude, John and Leo Summers; and daughter-in-law, Geri Horton.
