- Abner Johnson was born on 26 August 1738 in Wallingford, Connecticut.
- He graduated from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1759 He studied theology.
- He married Lydia Bunnell, daughter of Ebenezer Bunnell and Lydia Clark, on 30 June 1773 in Waterbury, Connecticut.
He was licensed to preach, but due to his very poor health he was a supply preacher, not definitely located. This led him to abandon the ministry and establish an apothecary shop in Waterbury - therefore he was called Dr. Having a knowledge of chemistry he manufactured many medicines and distilled essential oils from plants. Lydia "a most competent and intelligent woman" was his assistant.
"At times it was necessary for him to go to Boston on horseback to obtain certain medicines. It is recorded in 1780 he asked permission (needed because of interstate restrictions) of the Legislature: 1 ton wheat flour, 3 barrels of pork. Refused!"
He held local offices in spite of poor health. After he died his son-in-law Frederick Leavenworth inherited the business. Later it went to his son Elisha Leavenworth, who became partner of Leavenworth and Dikeman. In 1938 some of the implements Dr. Johnson used were still in existence.

However, Curtis was handsome and determined to win her, which he did and that is why the liscence was safe in his pocket some days before the marriage. It was some time before her mother forgave and forgot, but she ended up liking Curtis very much.2

Faintly at the bottom of the picture is written: 'Respectfully presented to Miss C E Lewis with the artist's best regards' and it is signed C J Kierulff Jul 1865. Records show a C J Kierolff was in the 45the Alabama Regiment, Company I of the Confederate Army.1
