Melba Althera Lewis Born Gunnison, Utah On 12/04/03
On May 27th, 2003 she passed into the open arms of her husband Clifford, mother and father and 12 siblings who preceded her.
Melba grew up in Utah County and dearly loved going to school, but she had to quit in the 7th grade to go to work to help support her family.
Thus began her life-long dedication to providing for her loved ones.
Melba spent the early years of her marriage herding sheep with Clifford on the Lewis family ranch in Tabiona. She loved to tell stories about what she often described as one of the happiest times in her life: riding horses in the mountains, sleeping in a tent, and living under the stars.
Her maternal strengths were shared among three generations. Four children mourn the passing of their beloved mother: Alden D. Lewis, Sharrel David Lewis, Margean Sinclair and Jo Juliano. She will also be greatly missed by 20 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
After Clifford's death in 1942, Melba turned her home in Salt lake City into a boarding house to support her children. Her career after that was long and varied and included several baking and cooking jobs. The one she probably liked best was the one that never generated any income: baking cheese and cinnamon rolls for her large extended family. Grandma's rolls were a family tradition at every holiday gathering. She continued to work well into her 80's by taking cleaning jobs in the homes of "little old ladies," some of whom were younger than she.
Besides being an excellent baker, she was an accomplished quilter and crocheter. Each of her grandchildren received one of her quilts as a wedding gift and many family members cherish the afghans she created.
Melba Lewis was a life-long devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions of service throughout her life. Through her commitment and dedication to the church, she practiced the principles of her religion every day in her service to God, to her family and her friends. She was a woman of integrity, dedication, and great strength of character. Her sense of humor, enthusiasm for adventure, and wisdom are among the great gifts she left behind. She told us the stories of the past and instilled in us the knowledge of who we are and where we came from. She left us in awe and wonder, for many of us have done well, but she surpassed us all.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 31, 2003, 1:00 p.m., at the Imperial Second Ward, 1560 East Atkin Ave (2825 South), where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the services. Interment: Midvale City Cemetery. Mother believed (and told everyone she spoke to) she lived in the finest place in the whole State. Our heartfelt THANK YOU to Ramona Linnell and her wonderful staff at the Sarah Daft Home.
Funeral Directors: The Holbrook Mortuary.
