Alan John Carey aka Papa Al
May 8, 1959 - October 21, 2014
Born in Troy NY on May 8, 1959, Alan John Carey spent his youth in Cambridge NY.
Alan and his former wife Susan (Narkiewicz), also of Cambridge, had two sons: Ian Christopher Carey and Kalen Lee Carey who grew up in Cambridge and Greenwich NY.
Alan lived in many places (CT, FL, GA,IL,NM) subsequent to settling in Green Island NY.
The most important thing to Alan was his family and he took great pride in hosting Sunday dinners for his and Mary’s grandchildren and children.
As a man whose gruff exterior sometimes belied his compassionate and generous soul, it meant a lot to him to be called “Papa Al”. The story goes that all the children on the street where his grandchildren lived would come running to Papa Al when they saw him come for a visit.
He loved life and lived it with zest.
There was no one that Alan wouldn’t help if he thought they were in need. It didn’t matter if you were the king or a pauper; everyone was the same in Alan’s eyes. If he loved you, he loved you, and that love ran deep with Alan.
When his niece was in a coma, Alan read to her for hours –sometimes all night -so she would know someone was with her.
Alan was a lover of sports for most of his life. He was a little league star as a child and participated in golf and dart tournaments as an adult – even earning a hole-in-one at Pine Lakes Country Club in Jensen Beach FL.
He loved fishing from the time his grandfather taught him to hook a worm as a very young child.
He was also a devoted football fan, reluctant to be too far from a VIKINGS game broadcast after Sunday dinner (along with the whole family, children and all, sitting around watching the game in their football jerseys of which there were as many different jerseys as there were football teams.)
Alan installed cable television in its early years and was a carpenter, dry wall finisher and general handyman before going to work for Capitaland Taxi in Troy NY. Alan worked for Capitaland Taxi as both a dispatcher and taxi driver.
He was a past employee of Earl B. Feiden Appliances where he worked side-by-side with his son Ian and his son-in-law Carl for a number of years.
Besides his mother, Mary Ella (n/n Casey) Arnold (Finning,Carey) Whitten, a native of Cambridge, NY who now lives in Stuart FL and Sunderland, VT, Alan leaves behind his long time companion Mary Christian, his son Ian (Tammy) Carey and children: Dominick, Damian, Dana, Derik, Delilah and Destiny, (the “D” force) his son Kalen Carey and children Journey and Jada; also Carl Christian, Sr. with children Carl, Jr. and Makayla Christian; brothers: Leonard (Maureen) Finning, Daniel A (Suzanne) Carey, half-brothers: Joseph Carey, Nicholas Carey; sisters: Lorna Finning, Linda (Pat) Kelley, Lari Ann (Mike) Hayes, half-sisters: Diane Carey and Janice Carey; step brothers: James (Sue) Whitten, Robert (Maria) Whitten and Richard (Vanessa) Whitten. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles as well as his faithful dog, Bella.
Alan’s father Daniel Anthony Carey of Waterbury CT; his younger brother George J Carey of Stuart FL; his niece Heather Finning-Spendiff of Cambridge NY; as well as both his maternal grandparents (Harry and Jennie {Loveland} Arnold of Cambridge NY) and paternal grandparents (Joseph and Emma {Distefano} Carey of Watertown, CT) predeceased him.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St, Cambridge NY 12816.
There will be a Celebration of Alan’s Life at the American Legion Captain Maxson, 2106 State Route 22, Cambridge NY on Saturday, November 1st from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. (518-677-8069).
