Gladys Cook Somerby of Pensacola, Florida, went home to heaven on May 18, 2013, just two days shy of her 92nd birthday. She was born on May 20, 1921, to Earl and Ellen Arvidson Cook in Ashtabula, Ohio. After living in several places around the country, she and her family settled in Pensacola in 1953. While a stay-at-home mom, she served as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, Room Mother, PTA officer, and Poll Worker. After her children were grown, she started a full-time career as an Accounting Technician at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, from which she retired in 1986. She was a member of Richards Memorial United Methodist Church for the past 45 years, where she enjoyed being a part of the Doletha Morrison Sunday School Class.
Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, brother Donald Cook, and son Leslie Glenn Somerby.
She is survived by her son Chuck (Sarah) Somerby of Smyrna, TN, and daughters Terry (Don) Marks of Boca Raton, FL, and Bonny (Tommy) Johns of Pensacola; grandchildren Becky Van Gilder, Chad Somerby, Brad Sherwood, Barbara Sherwood, Lisa Gonzales, Leslie Pruitt, and Susan Gossert; and great-grandchildren Taylor Van Gilder, Ryon Green, Tanner Van Gilder, Victoria Somerby, Trent Van Gilder, Joey Gonzales, Tate Van Gilder, Kaylea Miller, Mikey Gonzales, Calvin Gossert, Bella Gonzales, and Cooper Gossert.
